Heineken beer was born when, back in 1864, 22 year-old Gerard Adriaan Heineken set himself a simple mission: create the perfect beer.
Gerard took over Amsterdam’s old De Hooiberg (Haystack) brewery and decided to run it according to two simple principles: treat people properly and produce nothing less than the highest quality beer. Success soon followed, but there was more to come.
Gerard's relentless quest for perfection led to his discovery of the unique Heineken ‘A’ yeast – the secret ingredient that guarantees every glass of Heineken beer is as good as the last. The result: increased demand, a booming export business and international recognition as a premium beer of the highest quality.
Today, Heineken beer – still brewed according to Gerard Adriaan Heineken’s principles using Heineken ‘A’ yeast - is enjoyed in over 170 countries.
